When I was a child I looked up to my grandmother very much. She wore her hair long and would often clip it up or braid it… this was a distinct feature of my grandmother… during these days and times women have to struggle with body image quite a bit and this piece was very emotional for me… Sometimes I find myself hiding my body and being ashamed of the way I look because of society… I wanted to celebrate the female body and create a series of paintings that focused on the natural beauty of a woman body and the beautiful hair that I remember my grandmother had… The combination of the two set me on a very emotional painting journey… But I love the outcome and more will be painted very soon.

For this series I masked off the body image and used multiple layers of drips to create the background. Acrylic paints, inks, oxides, powders and varnishes  were used to create these effects. Once I was happy with the background I remove the masking and began working on the female figure.  Each painting is mostly monochrome with a color choice lightly kissing the highlights of the painting.  

The braided beauty series was inspired by the way my grandmother used to wear her hair. She had a long beautiful hair that she would twist up or braid and as a child I really loved that. My grandmother was an artist and an extreme inspiration in all that I do. She always tried to instill  confidence in me, it wasnt until recently that I started to honor the way that I am, embrace and love myself.   I hope this painting is a reminder of how beautiful, we,YOU are.
