As a child I was very close with my grandmother she was definitely my mentor. Her hair remained very long for her entire life… And she would often twist it up and clip it up or braid it… The braids would get really loose and messy but I just loved the look and feel of her hair.

This series was created to help me deal with some of the body image issues are used to have as a woman/child. I wanted to celebrate the natural beauty of a woman's body and also pay tribute to my beautiful grandmother's hair. The combination of the two sent me on a very emotional Journey as I created each of these paintings.  You may notice the background is very abstract and whether looking. The whole process was started by masking off the main part of the female body and then just spraying and dripping and having a blast with the background. It took a few days to create all the layers and get it to where I wanted it to be but once I did I had the inspiration for my color palette and it went from there. I love how she turned out.

For this series I masked off the body image and used multiple layers of drips to create the background. Acrylic paints, inks, oxides, powders and varnishes  were used to create these effects. Once I was happy with the background I remove the masking and began working on the female figure.  Each painting is mostly monochrome with a color choice lightly kissing the highlights of the painting.  

The braided beauty series was inspired by the way my grandmother used to wear her hair. She had a long beautiful hair that she would twist up or braid and as a child I really loved that. My grandmother was an artist and an extreme inspiration in all that I do. When I created the series it was to honor the female body and honor the confidence that we should all have in the way that we look. We are all beautiful. I hope this painting brings you the the feeling of confidence, safety and love.
